The
Problem
The upper latch points of the Super Lynx Helicopter nacelle did not allow for a
visual inspection. It was difficult to assure that required latch points were properly
closed and secured. Additionally, a two person team was required to open and close
the nacelle with limited access in a restricted platform space.
The Solution
Through the process of Solutioneering® and working closely with the customer, Hartwell’s
engineering team designed a fully remote three-point latch system that operates
from a single handle. The system’s design also includes additional safety features
that insure proper operation with the added convenience of being functioned by one
mechanic instead of two.
The Benefits
Because the system reduced the number of mechanics required to perform maintenance
on the restricted space of the Super Lynx, man hours were reduced and work space
was freed up. The upper latch points incorporate a design that provides a system
safety lock-out feature if the latches are not properly engaged. This allows the
operating handle to act as a flagging indicator that will not lock into the stowed
position if any of the latch points are not properly closed. The system guarantees
proper sequencing of the latches and the benefit of knowing the nacelle is secured
after every inspection or service, further reducing the chances of operator error.
