McKECHNIE AEROSPACE STRUCTURES GROUP TO OFFER FIRST WATERPROOF ACCESS DOOR LATCHES

Solutioneering Leads to New Latch Design That Positively Won't let Water in; Prevents Potentially Significant Damage Due to Leakage

February 24th, 2004 . Hartwell Corporation, a member of the McKechnie Aerospace Structures Group, has utilized a unique process called Solutioneering to develop the industry's first waterproof access door latch designed for commercial and corporate aircraft applications. The new rotary-panel style latches, designated HA1051-1, were conceived originally to rectify problems suffered by a major aircraft manufacturer that had significant wiring and other internal damage due to leakage of "water resistant" access door latches during high pressure cleaning. McKechnie Aerospace plans to offer the new latching systems to OEMs for aircraft in development as well as seek PMA approval and pursue retrofit applications through its Aftermarket Group on selected aircraft.

In addition to being 100% waterproof, its unique design makes it air-proof as well. The latch is able to withstand up to 7.03 Kg/cm2 (100 PSI) of water pressure and has a 500 lb. Load capability. It can easily be retrofitted on any aircraft, replacing any two-button panel latch. The rotary handle acts as a safety flag by ensuring that when in the stowed position, the cargo door is properly secured. As with all Hartwell latches, it is made of corrosion resistant materials and is easy to operate.

The McKechnie Aerospace Structures Group designs, manufactures and services latches, latching systems, engineered flight control rods, interior and exterior hold-open rods, airframe and engine struts, integrated door and canopy sub-assemblies and systems. Through Solutioneering, the Group works proactively with its customers to achieve the fulfillment of opportunities through pioneering solutions in products and services that deliver enhanced performance and lowest total cost of ownership.
