McKECHNIE AEROSPACE SYNCHRONIZED FLAP CONTROL ACTUATORS ABOARD ECLIPSE 500 PROGRAM

New Advanced Digital Flap Control System Advances Flight Safety, is a Result of Solutioneering

(AUGUST 15, 2003) … McKechnie Aerospace’s Electromechanical Group announced that its synchronized flap actuator system has been successfully tested on Eclipse Aviation’s revolutionary Eclipse. Previous to this first series of tests, the aircraft had flown in a fixed flap position. During the original test flight and subsequent flights, the system has worked without problem in all positions.

Designed in close collaboration with Eclipse Aviation engineers, McKechnie Aerospace’s Wichita Kansas based Electromech Technologies used a process the company terms Solutioneering to engineer the new “intelligent”, high power-to-weight ratio electromechanical actuators and related components comprising the digital flap system. The system provides synchronous linear extend and retract motion and can be programmed to any interim flap position desired. Communication between the actuators is constantly monitored via the 2-wire digital Controller Area Network bus, and integrated drive electronics provides servo control. Integrated LVDT devices in each of the actuators provide continuous position feedback, and any non-intentional asymmetry (within .080 inch of actuator travel) results in the entire system being held stationary at that point. Intentional asymmetry can be programmed to allow for different inboard and outboard strokes.

Eclipse Aviation is in the business of designing, certifying and producing modern, affordable jet aircraft. The company is applying advanced electronics systems, manufacturing and business practices to produce aircraft that cost less than a quarter of today's small jet aircraft, will be significantly safer and easier to operate than those of today, and have the lowest cost of ownership ever achieved in a jet aircraft.
