RENO, NV (Nov. 21, 2003) ... The McKechnie Aerospace Aftermarket Group is offering value-added PMA seals that replace the original seals designed for ducting on pneumatic, anti-ice and air-conditioning systems on Airbus aircraft. The original seals have had a poor performance history, leading to excess bleed air leakage that reduces system efficiency, impacts aircraft dispatch and reliability, and increases maintenance costs by necessitating unscheduled seal replacement.
Developed by the Advanced Products Company in conjunction with Airbus and assisted by the McKechnie Aerospace Aftermarket Group, the replacement seals incorporate a two-piece, spring-energized, high temperature polymer design that helps eliminate unscheduled seal replacement. The innovative two-piece design allows the stiffer seals to be flexed for installation into the sealing groove without compromising the seal. The seal subsequently received FAA-PMA approval under a licensing agreement with Airbus Industries. Seals are available for Airbus A300, A310, A320, A321, A330 and A340 aircraft produced prior to 2002.
The enhanced performance and durability of the Advanced Products’ design reduces operating and maintenance costs by reducing bleed air leakage and increasing seal service life. Because of the advantages, Airbus switched to the new seals in their production aircraft beginning in the first quarter of 2002. Airbus Service Bulletins A320-36-1043, A330-36-3027 and A340-36-4024 introduced the new seals and state that their installation will “reduce troubleshooting and maintenance expenses and will improve the dispatch reliability of the aircraft.”
